Galveston Bay Fishing Report

(June 19, 2008) June started off with winds and slack tides which really messed up Galveston East Bay the week of the 9th-13th. We were able to pick up some specks on little Hanna’s and south shoreline shell areas. A few fish were also being caught on the south shoreline areas in the late evening.

This week the bite really turned around when the winds died enough to let the bay begin to return to normal. Even though East Bay was still dirty, we were running to reefs and shell areas west toward the ship channel and catching good boxes of speckled trout and some good solid keeper reds.

Most of our fish have been caught with free lined live croaker but we have also picked up some trout under birds working out in the mid bay and north shoreline areas. Trout are also hitting artificials like assassins good on Hanna’s and Little Hanna’s Reefs.

This week the surf fishing on Bolivar and Crystal Beach has been excellent. Bolivar pocket has produced lots of specks hitting on top waters early. There have also been reports of good catches of large trout and reds at the old pier by High Island.

Pictured above is Jennifer McIntyre with her first specks, a 20” and 241/2”. She did great job fishing on her first time out and really made her dad proud. What a great way to start off her saltwater fishing experience.

(June 3, 2008) On the last few weekdays of May, the speckled trout fishing has really turned on in Galveston East Bay. When the winds cooperated, we had limits or near limits of speckled trout taken from several mid bay oyster reefs. On windy days, we found the specks biting in areas like the Pig Pens and south shoreline marsh drain areas like Yates Bayou.

Pictured above are Texas A&M Coach, Vic Schaefer and Mr. Prince with a limit of large speckled trout we caught early in the morning before 8:30. We caught and released the rest of the morning until we ran out of shrimp. We have been catching some nice trout on the weekends, but not in the numbers as weekdays due to the crush of weekend boaters running their boats through the fish.

This week has been a different story with south winds howling over 20 mph on most days. On these windy days the pig pen area is about the best bet to fish and get out of the wind. There are still fish there on high tide and several over 5+ lbs have been caught the last few days. The Galveston Causeway Bridge has also had good reports the last few days with anglers catching lots of trout with live shrimp fished under popping corks. Galveston North Jetty has also produced some tournament winning fish over 7lbs.

There are speckled trout and big reds in the surf and it should be excellent after the winds die some by the weekend. Waders at Rollover Pass have been braving the wind and waves for limits of speckled trout on the outgoing evening tides. Bolivar Pocket is also hot now. Waders there have been getting speckled trout, reds, and sharks. Also, a few ling and Spanish mackerel have been reported being caught in the pocket.

I have some openings for weekdays in June and July. Weekdays always offer the best fishing. So if you can, it is worth taking off on a weekday to make the most of your fishing time.
