This is a Mitchell's Wentletrap, (Amaea mitchelli),
dedicated to J D Mitchell, early Texas naturalist. Size: 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches ![]() Color: Pale ivory with dark brownish bands. It is larger than most wentletraps and is indigenous to Texas, (first found here). Good specimens are rare. I have only found one Mitchell Wentletrap here on Bolivar in the twenty some odd years that we have lived here and combed the beaches. And that one I found on the "flats" near the jetty. Many of our special shells are found there. We used to find lots of "crucifix fish" drying on the "flats". They are really the skeletal head of a hard-head catfish and they look like Christ's crucifix. What a treasure! |
